Assess: Why Your Body Needs to Be Understood Before It Can Be Supported

Many women arrive in midlife feeling like their body has suddenly changed.

But often, when we slow down and look more closely, the change was not sudden at all.

The symptoms may have appeared suddenly.

The weight may have shifted quickly.

The fatigue may have become impossible to ignore.

The sleep may have started breaking more often.

The brain fog may have become more frustrating.

The joint pain, inflammation, mood changes or hormonal symptoms may have reached a point where they could no longer be dismissed.

But underneath those symptoms, there is usually a longer story.

A story of adaptation.

A story of stress.

A story of changing hormones, changing capacity, changing roles, changing responsibilities and changing biology.

This is why the first step in the FeelGood Method is Assess.

Because before we can know what to do, we need to understand what is really going on.

Assessment is not about judgement

When many women think about assessment, they think about being measured, weighed, analysed or told what they are doing wrong.

That is not what I mean by assessment.

Assessment is not judgement.

Assessment is curiosity.

It is the process of gathering information so we can better understand the body, the person and the pattern.

It asks:

What is your body showing us?

What has changed?

What has been ignored?

What has been normalised?

What has been building quietly in the background?

What support might your body need now that it did not need in the same way ten years ago?

When assessment is done well, it should not make a woman feel broken.

It should help her feel more understood.

Your symptoms are information

Symptoms can be frustrating, uncomfortable and sometimes frightening.

But they are also information.

Fatigue may tell us something about sleep, stress, iron, thyroid function, blood sugar, mitochondrial health, inflammation, under-fuelling or recovery.

Weight gain may tell us something about hormones, insulin, muscle mass, cortisol, movement patterns, nutrition, sleep, gut health, inflammation or genetic tendencies.

Brain fog may tell us something about blood sugar regulation, stress chemistry, sleep quality, oestrogen changes, nutrient status, inflammation or cognitive load.

Joint pain may tell us something about inflammation, immune activity, tissue recovery, movement patterns, nutrient needs or years of accumulated load.

Mood changes may tell us something about hormones, neurotransmitters, nervous system stress, sleep, blood sugar, beliefs, boundaries or emotional capacity.

This does not mean every symptom has one simple explanation.

It usually does not.

But it does mean symptoms are worth listening to.

Not obsessing over.

Not fearing.

Listening.

Data matters, but context matters too

Because of my science and nursing background, I value data.

Blood markers, health history, genetic insights, body composition, symptoms, medications, menstrual history, menopause stage, sleep patterns, movement habits, nutrition, stress load and family history can all give us important clues.

But data on its own is not the whole picture.

A blood test may be “normal”, but the woman may still feel far from well.

A genetic result may show a tendency, but it does not define destiny.

A symptom score may show high stress, but we still need to understand the life that is creating that stress.

A food diary may show what someone eats, but not why they are eating that way, what capacity they have, or what beliefs are driving their choices.

This is why assessment needs both science and story.

The numbers matter.

The lived experience matters.

The body’s signals matter.

The woman’s season of life matters.

When we bring those pieces together, we can begin to see patterns more clearly.

Belief, biology, behaviour and becoming

At FeelGood Integrative Health, assessment is not limited to one area of health.

I look through the lens of four interconnected pillars:

Belief
What do you believe about yourself, your body, your worth, your capacity and what is possible for you?

Biology
What is your body expressing through hormones, metabolism, inflammation, energy, digestion, detoxification, genetics, sleep and recovery?

Behaviour
What daily signals are you sending your body through food, movement, stress, sleep, environment, thoughts and routines?

Becoming
Who are you becoming in this season of life, and does your current way of living support that woman?

This matters because many women have tried to change behaviour without understanding belief.

They have tried to manage symptoms without understanding biology.

They have tried to follow plans that do not match who they are becoming.

And then they blame themselves when the plan does not last.

But maybe the issue was never willpower.

Maybe the plan was not aligned with the person, the body or the life in front of it.

Assessment helps reduce overwhelm

One of the biggest benefits of assessment is that it helps reduce overwhelm.

When a woman is dealing with multiple symptoms, it can feel like everything needs to be fixed at once.

The hormones.

The weight.

The gut.

The sleep.

The stress.

The inflammation.

The exercise.

The food.

The supplements.

The mindset.

The blood tests.

The appointments.

It becomes exhausting before she has even started.

But assessment helps us identify priorities.

It helps us ask:

What is the most important starting point?

What is likely driving the most disruption?

What is within reach right now?

What would create the most stability first?

What does this woman actually have capacity for?

Because the best plan is not always the most impressive plan.

The best plan is the one that meets the body where it is, while gently moving it in the direction of better health.

Your body is not a project to perfect

One of the most important shifts in midlife health is moving away from the idea that your body is a project to control.

Your body is not something to punish into compliance.

It is not something to ignore until it breaks down.

It is not something to compare to who you were at 25, 35 or even 45.

Your body is a living, adaptive system.

It has carried you through decades of life, stress, responsibility, achievement, caregiving, emotion, pressure and change.

Assessment gives us a chance to listen differently.

To stop asking, “How do I force my body back?”

And start asking, “What does my body need now?”

That question changes everything.

The first step is understanding

In the FeelGood Method, Assess is the foundation.

It is the step that helps us move from confusion to clarity.

It allows us to understand the body before we try to change it.

It honours the science, but also the story.

It helps us see symptoms not as failure, but as feedback.

And it gives us a more personalised starting point.

Because when you understand what your body is trying to show you, your next step becomes clearer.

Not perfect.

Not always simple.

But clearer.

And clarity is often the first place a woman begins to feel hope again.

Reflection

If you have been feeling frustrated with your body, ask yourself:

Have I been trying to change my body before I have truly understood what it is asking for?

That question is not about blame.

It is about beginning again, with more compassion, more clarity and better information.

Feel Good. Live Aligned.
